1. Professional Talk
Title: Class Management Problems and How to Solve Them!
Speaker: George Vassilakis, Director, Language Certification Dept, PEOPLECERT S.A.

Summary: Students not doing what you asked them to do, students using their mother tongue when they should be interacting in English, students taking a long time to complete an activity you thought they’d finish in less than 5 minutes: these are just some of the problems that poor class management can lead to! This presentation looks at what causes such problems and how they can be overcome so that learners and teachers can work together in an optimal environment that truly supports learning.

2. Commercial Talk 1
Title: Writing in the City & Guilds IESOL Exams: Task Types, Demands, Assessment
Speaker: George Lampropoulos, Academic Associate, Language Certification Dept, PEOPLECERT S.A.

Summary:This presentation looks at the writing genres tested at levels B2, C1 and C2 of the City & Guilds exams. The types of tasks that candidates are asked to perform will be discussed, the requirements will be analysed and the assessment criteria will be demonstrated. Participants will also be given tips for preparing learners for the writing component of the exams and for evaluating the learners’ performance.

Title: City & Guilds International English Qualifications: Opportunities for Schools and Teachers

Summary: The City & Guilds IESOL and ISESOL exams are available both via authorized examination centres and independently. In this presentation, school owners can find out what the many benefits to their schools are should they decide to go the authorized centre way, whether by opting for the paper based or the computed based test version. At the same time, both school owners and teachers will find out about the City & Guilds Teachers’ Club and the exclusive privileges it offers to them for free if their students choose to take part in our exams.

10.00 – 11.00      City & Guilds IESOL: Dealing with the Reading Section
This presentation focuses on the reading skills and strategies tested in the City & Guilds IESOL examinations. The task types used in the exams will be analysed, the candidates' performance (including problems and difficulties) will be discussed and suggestions will be made for helping learners develop the skills necessary so that they can adapt their reading approach to the different types of texts and tasks they may come across in the IESOL examination. Finally, exam preparation and exam management tips will be given to help the learners develop their test taking strategies with regard to the reading paper.

11.00 – 11.30      Coffee Break

11.30 – 13.00      Using communication tasks to enhance speaking performance
Using communication tasks in the classroom requires careful selection of material that will not only match the students' level and interests but also help them develop their speaking ability in terms of fluency, accuracy and complexity. To ensure learners do not just ‘practise’ speaking but actually learn how to speak better, teachers will also need to help the learners prepare for the tasks in terms of language and content and they  will need to provide appropriate feedback on language and  task performance. In this workshop, participants will learn how to select communication tasks for different levels and types of students and how to use the tasks to enhance learners' speaking performance so that they can become successful communicators and, incidentally, pass their exams.
